When I Grow Up, I Want to be a Video Game Composer… Summer’s around the corner, and suddenly, the outdoors seem so much more appealing! But I may end up hidden in my studio… So much to learn, so much to compose, so much to listen to!
What’s Been Going On?
I’ve been pretty good at keeping my fire lit for music over the past few months. I’ve been taking my monthly lessons with VGM composer Joel Corelitz. A month ago, he assigned me homework for which I had to rescore music for a game he originally scored called TumbleSeed. Listen to the three tracks I wrote : Bloom Quest, The Seed Trials and Sproutbound. My lessons with him have been helping me in my work with electronic music, synths and sound design, and I was able to complete a collection of compositions that features cyberpunk and space music. Apart from that, my redesigned website has been attracting much more traffic. Thanks Rick! I was hoping to have published a few blog posts by now, but so far, I wrote just one about the upcoming video game The Fountains. Go read that blog post, and check out the Kickstarter campaign. If the developer reaches his goal, he’ll hire me to write the music. So far, the game uses music I provided in a free asset pack on itch.io.
Shadow Maiden
Back in December, I was hired back to compose the soundtrack for the upcoming video game Shadow Maiden. It’s a role-playing video game with JRPG esthetics and turn-based combat, and has a deep story and complex characters. It is the very kind of video game that I adored growing up and that made me fall in love with video game music. For me, this is absolutely a dream project. I feel like I get to score a Final Fantasy! I’m writing character motifs and themes, developing them and writing variations for them, creating emotional textures, and very intense battle music. A demo will be coming out soon, and I hope you’ll want to try it out. I’ll keep you in the loop. As for now, listen to the eight tracks that I have composed so far.
Classical Guitar News
Apart from video game music composition, I get to study and play the classical guitar every day! At the end of February, there was a local guitar festival and I got to play as a soloist and as part of a guitar orchestra. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be giving a virtual recital and a formal recital, and I will be passing my level 9 examination for the Royal Conservatory of Music in June. Most interestingly, I have arranged the main theme from the soundtrack of Dungeon Delivered! for guitar orchestra and will be conducting it in August at the Camp musical du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.
Featured Music
In this new section of the newsletter, I’d like to feature new music that’s been particularly important to me in recent weeks. Bloom Quest is an orchestral piece that I wrote as homework for my composition coach. City by the Weeping Sea is electronic music using skills that I have been working on. And Facing Down the Demons is an intense boss battle track from Shadow Maiden. Enjoy!
Exclusive Content For Subscribers
I’d like to share cool content with you since you have been so nice in supporting my art by reading this newsletter. This time, I have two gifts to share with you, and they are so precious that they were not made public on my YouTube channel. Firstly, I participated in a composition challenge on the Become A Pro Composer community discord channel and created this silly orchestral track. Read the description to understand the context. Secondly, I recently released an asset pack of free music on itch.io, and published this 30 minute compilation of the music. Pop this in the car if you want to go on an adventure!
What’s Next?
For the next few weeks and months, Shadow Maiden, my studies of electronic music and my guitar activities will definitely keep me busy! Did I mention that I have also started work on a new album featuring unique sound design and synthesis and depicting the elements (water, fire, earth, etc.) in all of their forms? With the summer holidays around the corner, I will have to find time to relax and even go on a family vacation. Game Over... Until the Next Score!
